All-on-4 Dental Implants
A little-known alternative to having single dental implants inserted for every tooth that is missing, if there are many on either the upper or lower arch, is known as the All-on-4 implant platform.
According to the American College of Prosthodontists, the professional organization for specialists in dental prosthetic devices such as implants and dentures, about 180 million Americans have lost at least one tooth. Teeth that are missing can be due to vehicle or sports accidents or because of poor dental hygiene which leads to periodontal (gum) disease, which pulls the gums away from their support for teeth. By the time men and women are aged 35-49, the average person is missing three, those 50-64 have lost an average of five, and the 75 or older no longer have any teeth.
A Less Invasive Technique
Not everyone can qualify for dental implants, such as those who are heavy smokers, suffer from severe osteoporosis or uncontrolled diabetes, or lack enough jawbone to support implants or even have a bone graft to add to it.
But if you lack many teeth on either or both arches, you may not want dentures, since most just sit on top of the gums and have to be adjusted and refitted about every five years to adapt to the natural erosion of the jaw the occurs when teeth or implants are not anchored into the bone.
A Natural Look and Feel
Both in terms of cost and the length of the procedure for each implant, All-on-4 provides a very attractive alternative. Unless wisdom teeth or others have been removed, a full arch will have 28 teeth. Remarkably, this platform can hold as many dental crowns, which look like the visible part of the tooth, as you lack, but the All-on-4 can be anchored into the jawbone with just four implant screws
If you are missing lots of teeth, set an appointment with Dr. Rad for a full examination to determine what your best options are for restoring your oral health, enabling you to speak and chew as you did with a full set of teeth.
